“The aim of this project was to produce a simple range of sake aimed at a western audience. By limiting the range to the three basic varieties and eliminating the confusing Japanese terminology my intention was to make it as clear as possible. To produce the different grades of sakes the rice grain is polished to remove the proteins and oils from its exterior. The more the rice is polished the better the outcome. This process of refinement is high-lighted through the decreasing opacity of the bottles.”

14- Sakura cigarettes

Rather than using the conventional image of a cherry blossom flower, JT SAKURA employs simple designs to capture the essential image of cherry blossom that people have in their own minds. The colouring, which gives the flowers a misty, distant effect, comes from a piece of paper used in a Heian Period (794-1185) artwork called "Tsugishikishi" by the calligrapher Onono Tofu (also known as Onono Michikaze). Inside "Tsugishikishi" is a blank page, and we have used this as the colour of the package. To seal it, we used a thin paper seal on one side. The paper is decorated with a unique representation of "yaezakura" (mountain cherry). When you open the catalog, this semi-transparent inner sheet decorated with tie-dyed cherry blossoms is the first page you see. The catalog is an SP tool used when JT Sakura was first launched; at that time it was a fictional piece of work which illustrated the pleasure of smoking tobacco, as enjoyed by literary personalities at the start of the Showa Period (1926-1989).

“In designing this packaging, we focused on a couple key things 1) make it as environmentally friendly as humanly possible, we did so by using 100% recyclable craft board that is 60% post consumer waste and printing with UV inks to make as little impact on the Earth as possible. And 2) design a trash bag package that is actually nice to look at. This included the obvious Glad/Hefty burst, bevel and glowing color madness as well as not falling into the classic “green” pitfalls we all know (i.e. a forest background and a leaf-inspired logo).
With these things driving the design, we created a line of packaging that feels high-quality and pops off the shelves because it sits back”
